Stem cells produce new cells. When stem cells are divided, they can produce their own cells or they can produce other cells of another type. Skin stem cells, for example, can make more stem cells or they can make different cells in the skin that have their special work.

The function of these cells in the body is that they, when disruption and disease, are multiplied and provide new cells to the tissue that forms the basis of the cell therapy.

For example, when we get injured or sick, our cells will either be damaged or destroyed. When this happens, stem cells are activated.

Stem cells are responsible for repairing damaged tissues and replacing cells that normally die. It's what keeps our stem cells healthy and prevents our early aging.

In the West Asia region, countries have made plenty of plans for achieving these sciences, among which Iran is leading the way in gaining science in the West Asia region.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has been able to record many successes in the field of stem cells, including the following:

• Establishment of the first science and technology park specialized in stem cells (Cell City)

• Use of stem cells to repair heart lesions caused by stroke

• Use of stem cells to repair corneal lesions of the eye

• Establishment of the first private bank of umbilical cord blood of babies

• The birth of the first colonized animal in the West Asia region (Royana)

• The birth of two calves and three colonized yeanlings

• Production of human induced pluripotent stem cells

With this view, the share of Iran's scientific documentation in the field of stem cells in 2016 compared to the countries of the Western Asia region is 25%, with Turkey with 17% and Saudi Arabia with 7% follow Iran. The countries of Egypt, Lebanon, Pakistan and Jordan with their investments are in the next place.

Now Iran, after 40 years since its Islamic Revolution and after many sanctions by the West, has been able to rank first in this science in West Asia.
