A young man approached his father. It has been narrated that Ali Akbar (as) was between 18 to 25 years old; that is to say he was at least eighteen and at most twenty-five. Ali Akbar walked out of Imam Hussain’s (as) camp to fight. It has also been narrated that he was one of the best-looking young men in the world; he was handsome, tall and courageous. He asked his father for permission to fight on the battle field. Imam Hussain granted him the permission right away.

The moment Hussain Ibn Ali (as) fell off his horse, due to gashing wounds received during the final moments of his life, his horse swiftly galloped back to the camp riderless. Imam Hussain’s family, noticed something happened to Imam Hussain (as), each reacted to the sad news in a different way. One note worthy reaction is that of Abdallah.

If a homes electricity goes out for 2-3 hours during the summer time, parents won’t be concerned about themselves getting heat-sick; they won’t be distraught by their own sweat and frustration with the heat. But when a mother sees her child restless, finding it difficult to sleep due to the extreme heat, her heart burns in despair.

Hazrat Abulfadhl Al-Abbas’s loyalty was most clearly manifested when he went to the Euphrates River but abstained from drinking water. The well-known narration of the event, which is widely related to by the people, is that Imam Hussain (as) sent Hazrat Abulfadhl to fetch water. However, what I have read in authentic versions of the narration—like those of “Irshad” by Mufid and “Lohoof” by Ibn Tawous—is slightly different from the common narration, probably highlighting the significance of the event.

After escaping violence in Myanmar, last August, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslim refugees are living in overpopulated camps. The conditions and sanitation are poor and the spread of disease is rife. As health services struggle to cope, one disease, in particular, is at risk of slipping under the radar. Leprosy thrives in areas with poor hygiene and overcrowded housing conditions, yet low awareness of the disease and an overwhelmed healthcare system means people remain untreated.

Today, around 12 million Palestinians live in exile of their homeland. This is a direct result of what was set into motion by the Balfour Declaration.
